Changing number format in option value

How do I change the format a number appears in a drop down menu? I tried the using

number_format($a1[Price], 2, ".", "'");

but it didn't work.

This is an example of what I'm working with.

$prices .= "<option value=\"$a1[Price]\">US$ $a1[Price]</option>\n\t";

I don't see you doing anything with the result.

$prices .= "<option value=\"$a1[Price]\">US$ ".number_format(....)."</option>\n\t"
