memory usage in mysql

I have had several times today where I used php to import data, and the CPU usage by mysqld soared to 99.xx% and stayed there for a while. Memory usage was only about 5%. I'm running a Linux 8.0 server.

Also, mysqld was hanging at that 99.xx% after the process had completed. Server was so slow I had to reboot.

Any similar experiences out there? or known solutions? Is there any way to control the max cpu slices that mysqld will appropriate?

Sam can you let us know how you're importing data.

As an example if you do a mysqldump into some file.sql and then a mysql>source somefile.sql. There is a great amount of difference if you dumped with the -e flag or not.

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing so it would be great to have a follow up on this.
