[Resolved] data conversion (of sorts) ??

I am sure this is very simple, but for some reason the solution is completely escaping me... and searches have proved fruitless for me.

I am pulling data from a MySQL DB, and the row contains a numeric value. (i.e. 100, 101, 102 etc)

I want to then echo this information as text, so, 100 becomes Item1, 101 becomes Item2 etc.

I think I need to use a if/elseif/else setup.. ?

I hope this makes sense.. ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, my grey matter is now officially fried.

if else would be laborious work... Regxps work for this... but lets do something simpler than that

<?php
$value = 105 ; // This can be any value extracted from DB
$itemnumber = $value-99;

$itemname = "Item" .  $itemnumber; // Now $itemname has Item5 in it
echo $itemname;
?>

Boom we're done 😉

That would work perfectly, except, the data I want to display will not contain a numeric value at all. Re-reading my post, I did not explain very well..

the numbers from the DB (100, 101, 102, etc) I want to convert them to text, so for the sake of example:

100 would become, say, January,
101, February, and so on.

Guess we are talking about RDBMS concept here

Create a table, say testext, with columns - id and text

id -|- text
100 -|- January
101 -|- February
102 -|- march

goes on

Now, you would extract the number from your original table like you did before... say $value has that number... now use the following querry

"SELECT text FROM testext WHERE id='$value'";

This would do the job... dont think of Switch/Case or if else if if you have too many entries...

Certainly got something to get working on 🙂

There will only be about 6 numeric results, so that is why I was thinking of using the if/else but this will work just as well.

Lets us simple switch case since its only 6 cases

<?
$value = 105;  // Value from databse

switch ($value)
{
   case 100:
     $text = January;
     break;
   case 101:
    $text = February;
    break;
  .... 
 ....
 ....
   default:
    echo "No such option";
}
?>

This is a simple switch case statement that does the job.. take a look at this in PHP manual... Anyways, I still recommend using DB base... if its available...

The DB is an option, and I agree, I think it will be the best, as it will allow for the easy addition of future updates if required.
