SMS Project

I have a project I would like to create using PHP and SMS messaging, but am at a loss for how to go about it.

Description:
User with cell phone sees a sign or sticker in public place at the site of some historical event. They send an SMS message to the number listed on sign/sticker and revceive an automated message back to their phone that describes briefly the event that occured at the location where they stand.

Issues:
I am unsure how to deal with the various SMS numbers one would have to send to and how to circumvent the issue of various service providers.

I realize this may be a little outside of the topics this discussion board focusses on , but any guidance as to where to start with this would be much appreciated.

I have searched the boards for previous posts on teh topic and have not found anyone asking this type of question. I know you can send SMS messages with PHP. That is really the easy part. The difficult part is gateway or listening agent that receives teh SMS message, either via an email address reserved for the SMS inquireies or via one or more special numbers you can dial. Once the message is received the script will likely parse through and look for strings that will trigger a certian response (responses stored in a DB along with strings to try to match).

I understand the logic of the project, the part I am unclear about is how to go about building this listening agent to receive and read the incoming messages.

There are a few ways to do this:

1. aspsms.com -- i know its says asp, but it handles php np .

2. send an email to [e-mail], there are a few sites out there that list the appropriate tlds for each provider. Google for this...

Emails must be limited to 160 chars or it gets cut off.
