Hi all 🙂

I've got a coding question, what I am wondering is if it would be possible to create a script that can complete the following functions:

When a person sends an email to orders@mysite.com, they recieve an automated responce saying (More or less) "Thank you for submitting your order. Your order has been recieved and will be reviewed within 24-48 hours. You may track the progress of your order by logging into My Site (Link to log-in page "Here") with the below username and passwords:..." Here I'd like to have a valid username and password for the site's log-in system, randomized for each email of this type sent. (This means having a new user account or whatever is required in the PHP for each email sent).

I am just wondering if there's already a pre-made script that can create the following functions and/or if there's not how would I go about creating one?

The pre-made scripts are called "auto-responders". There are many available ... you see this all the time. Google® is your friend...

If you want to do it yourself, you'll probably have to be in control of the mail server for your site. Most hosting companies/ISP's are not gonna give you that kind of support, I'm guessing...unless your hosting package already includes an auto-responder, which it might...

The strategy for "rolling your own" might be: set up an alias that writes the mail to a file. Your script would run via cron, every couple minutes or so, and parse the file for details, then mail a reply. I've not done this before, but I was just playing with the mail server here, and it seems within the realm of capability. After all, how do they write auto-responders?

It might even be possible to pipe the mail directly to the program. Look for how to's on "mail writing to a pipe" or similar for Unix-like systems...list mail programs like Majordomo and Mailman do this all the time, I'm guessing....

I knwo you think this is resolved but there are 10 different ways to hurt a tree but 100 ways to knock it down.

I'm guessing seein as you've posted this in 'PHP' that you allow your user to email through a *.php form?

If this is how your users go about emailing you with orders then just send 2 emails instead of one. One to yourself with thier message and one to them saying 'Thank You'.

Use the same method one after the other!

If it is an autoresponder your looking for then why in PHP? :queasy:
