Ok I know this is probably THEE most basic request for help here and many if not all will think what the...

But my problem is this.

I signed up for a site, I want to create a forum for a few photog. friends and myself as we have mass exodus our current place and our MSN group just isn't that great.

Anyway, I signed up for this site, and now...IM STUCK, the url is:

www.thephotographersforum.com

And on the front page, ie the page the url takes you to is simply an ad for the host.

I have went through the files, and cannont find where I would change it, I have uploaded an image just to move it from folder to folder and still no luck........

I know this is basic but I have installed mambo, its working fine, Ive installed the PHP BB board thing and it shows I have 2 installations of that but can't see either of them! 😕

Could someone PLEASE pretty please walk me through what I need to look for or change or.....

Thanks in advance I know this is basic as butter but its stumped me from go.....

Hi,

Paste the following into a text editor, save it, and upload it to your site as "index.html".

If it says "Welcome to MY site", etc. when you go to the URL, then you're good to go. If not, your hosting company hasn't yet set up its services properly; or else you've just put it in the wrong folder. As you haven't said what folders you have, we can't help you much further....

Click on a folder icon to navigate.
Click on a name to view its properties.

THIS LAST ONE- the index.html is the one I copy and pasted as instructed above, but nothing happened.

Looking at these, which should I be uploading to? Can anyone tell?

When I click on them in cpanel all I get is options to edit, delete, move, copy etc...it won't open any of the folders, and the pages such as index it will open will give a description of such as what is above the MY site text or tell me its an ascii text or something...

That first page doesn't have any references to any pages within your account's web directories so I'm assuming that they have set the default page of your account on thier server itself in some form. You should look for a link that says something like 'publish site', 'assign first home page' or something similar.

It will be in the Control Panel of your account with them.

If this fails then this is what they have help desks for! Get in contact with them if all else fails.

Why are you asking the PHP Builder forum to resolve this? Why not ask the service provider instead.

Imagine if all of us with various application problems having nothing to do with PHP put messages about running Windows, Microsoft Word, Linux, etc. on here.

This place would be a zoo!

Not beiing quirky but I thought this was a forum for PHP and I thought that I was trying to set up a PHP based website.....God I could be wrong LOL!

I mean that in the nicest of "I have been up all night trying to figure this stupid thing out and I got tired of waiting for C.Services to reply to me eventually and went to google and entered PHP help and landed here kind of ways".

If I am in the wrong place please, forgive me, maybe this is an software specific forum and I didn't realize that, I honestly thought it was a PHP help site...generalized PHP scripting not specifically related to a particular Software/Board/etc..

But thanks for all the input thus far, it is appreciated.

it looks like your uploading index.html to OUTSIDE of your root dir. first go into public.html dir. and then upload index.html into that folder and replace the old index.html and see if that works.

Added: or you can also go into the www folder and upload there (there both your root dir. and they are the ones that are directly accessale from the web)

Well, I imagine you can be forgiven, more or less. Basically, most of the questions here are like:

"I'm trying to create a gonkulator app using PHP. Anyone tried this?"
"I've got this php page, and when I click foo, bar doesn't happen!"
"Anyone got the doodley-doo extension to work with php5 on Windows/IIS?"
"I've been trying all night to get this script to print my grandma's will when you enter the password, but it fails in the database code ... can you spot any errors? I get none from PHP..."

etc., etc.

But, you'll note that here there are, in addition to "newbies", several PHP category forums ("Coding", "PHP5", "Code Critique"), a "windows" forum, a "linux/unix" forum, and a "general help" forum. So you're not terribly off topic here. I think what Kerry is saying is that you really seem to be having a problem with your host's setup and/or control panel application, so you'd be a good bit better off to contact them for resolution than to expect heavy magic from us on something we can't see and don't necessarily know much about.

Nonetheless, you've gotten some good answers. I hope you'll stick around, and post again when you get ready to write your 'gonkulator' or lookup the family heirlooms.... 😉
