uploading files

im building an online community (like www.friendster.com or www.myspace.com) ...well...atleast trying. and... i pretty much got the idea and concepts down for loggin a user in...having them upload data like their profiles, 'about me' and blah blah blah...

now... id like to allow them to upload pictures of themselves to put with their profile... i dont want to store the images in the database... i want to store it in my webserver somewhere and retrieve it via file name and location. now heres my problem... i have no idea where to start as far as allowing them to upload their files...

can anybody tell me the concepts id need to look up to be able to do this... im a real newbie and have no idea where to start. general ideas alone would be of great help... i can look them up on the web.

Uploading Files are incredibly easy.

[man]move-uploaded-file[/man] [man]copy[/man] Are two functions you can use. Id also suggest running a search

hi there, i'm very new to world of php. i was trying to upload files from client (windows xp) to the server (Linux).
I have tried using copy and also move_uploaded_file
php commands.
I works but the problem is the size of the file in clients is different from size on the server.
eg : 24 kb of doc file becomes 40 kb of doc in linux.

When i try to open that file, MS Word could not read that file. It says file is corrupted.
same goes for xls, bmp, gif files etc.
Except for txt files. It will add some spaces on the begining of the line or end of line or bottom of the page but still could be open.

can anyone help me on this ? is they any setting needs to be done ?😕
