Populat a Drop down from a hyperlink

First let me explain what I'm trying to do. I have this form with a dynamic dropdown list. Next to it I have a hyperlink to pop up another window to do a search. Would anybody know if this is possible? After the search is done in the sane pop up window it dynamically creates a list and one of the colums is a hyperlink. Is there a way when one of the hyperlinks is clicked that it will close the pop up window and take that information and populate the dropdown list on the main page?

php is server side, what you want to do is client side.
