assigning relationships in phpMyadmin

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to assign relationships. mysql 4.0+, both tables are innodb.

1. I get back a red message no index defined! (parent_id) -- but I have clearly indexed both fields, it says so on the index list

2. Worse, I get back nothing at all, and in the relations view the selection on the list simply doesn't stick.

Any ideas what might be the reason(s)?
