i have news uploaded from a form wich have a rich editor to allow the user to choose bold or italic.

When the user copy/ paste from editors like word or openoffice
many tags come joined with the text.

eg:

So my attempt to shows the firsts 200 characters fail because many times
the 200 first chars are html propytary tags from these editors (alway enclosed)
by "<>" )

How can i workaround it? i try using:

$twolines = substr(strrchr($row["description"], ">"), 1, 200). "...";

try

$Start = "<body>";

$End = '</body>';

$justcontent = eregi("$Start(.*)$End", $r, $content);

where $r is the variable with the full page in it,
you can experiment with $start and $end so that you can include as much or as little of the page as required.

you can then see what is inside $content, it should be just the bits inbetween the body tags

Great example i will use in future projects but the propietary tags vary a lot because it is copyed and pasted from the user i can´t tell wich tags will be pasted i just know i will have tags "<><>"(i don´t even know if they will have matching pairs"<></>")

If you want to remove all tags, apart from say certain ones, like etc then you could try

$allowedtags="";
$cleaned_content = strip_tags( $content, $allowedtags);

Add any tags to the allowedtags variable that you want to keep, such as bold, italic etc

This will then strip out most tags, may not help if the allowed tags have extensions in them, but it may help

usualy these word openoffice tags come with atributes like:
 i try preg_replace to remove these tags but did not work:

$tags_and_content_to_strip = Array("p", "span");
foreach ($tags_and_content_to_strip as $tag) {
$contents = preg_replace("/<" . $tag . ">(.|\s)*?<\/" . $tag . ">/","",$contents);
