there's a function that replaces given string or array with different information (http://www.php.net/str_replace)
you may also want to consider PHP's ereg_replace function: http://us2.php.net/manual/en/function.ereg-replace.php

Although the [man]PCRE[/man] functions are more flexible and more powerful (as noted in the first paragraph of the main [man]regex[/man] page).
