PHP Pages have 5 second delay

Hi Everyone.

About a week or so ago, I had uploaded some new files to my website. About 90% of the content on my site is written in PHP. Anyway, the problem I am having is that every php page takes about 5-6 seconds to load. I've even ran some tests to narrow down the cause.

I created a simple one php file with one line between the body tags: (echo " page test"; ). The load time was delayed. I then created another simple html file with no php. The page loaded instantly. I further found the same results on all other html files.

I had also done this both on my intranet and the internet with same results. I captured the network traffic and found that webserver receives the request, and acknowledges it, instantly. Though there is a 5 second delay before sending output.

I am currently running out of ideas, any help would be much appreciated.

which OS and web server/PHP versions do you use ?

And how are you running PHP? As a module, or a CGI? I've noticed that running it as a CGI there can be a delay while the PHP executable is loaded up from the harddrive (though it stays swapped into core for a bit, which reduces the delay on subsequent pages for a bit).

Thanks for the assistance. The OS is Redhat 9.0 and PHP is version 4.2.2. As far as PHP being a module or CGI, I am not sure. PHP was installed during the initial install of the OS along with Apache (version 2.0.40). I would guess module, but I could be wrong.

The thing that boggles myself is that a week to two weeks ago, the server was fine and loaded php with little to no delay. I've check the CPU usage as well, and nothing out of the ordinary there.

I think, as a module, you can check that with a little phpinfo script. Near the top of the output is a row that shows how PHP is loaded.

Did you test the delay with different browsers ?

Yes. I have also tested on Netscape 7.2 with the same results.

The phpinfo shows server API as apache filter 2.0. Under server variables SERVER["GATEWAY_INTERFACE"] = CGI/1.1. This page also lists other "modules" available.

I just read through my php.ini file and gathered the directory where other php4 modules are available. I also noted that the output_buffering was set to off.

Ok,

I know that on recent Windows systems (especially with IIS 6.x) delay problems can appear. In most cases the problem can be solved by setting output_buffering to on in php.ini.

But I never had such problems with apache.

Well, I do appreciate your input. I had changed the out put buffering to on, then restarted the server. I am still am at the same delay results.
