calculating dates ?

hey everybody!

this is what im trying to do:

X (1st date) + Y (number of days) = Z (2nd date)

im totally lost. could somebody help me get started. there so many diffrent ways to express the date, im not sure which one i want to use.

well if you have the original date as a timestamp you can just do this

$y = 5; //number of days to add
$x + (86400*$y) = $newdate;
?>

what if it was from user input would i just switch the 86400 for the var that has the users date?

ok ok.. this is what i came up with:

<?php
for ($i = 0; $i < $days; $i++) {
echo date('F d', time() + $i * 86400);
}
?>

$days comes from a form element. its a number input by the user. the result spits out every day between the start day and the end day, how do i get it to just give me the last day?

ah ha! i got it.


for ($i = 0; $i < $days; $i++) {
$h = date('F d', time() + $i * 86400);
}

echo $h;

?>

changing the echo to a var and made it just show the last date that i wanted. woo hoo!

How exactly is that loop helping since you're overwritting the vairable through every iteration? Seems like the long way to say this:

$h = date('F d', time() + ($days - 1) * 86400);

most likely cause im still a newbie to php and the long way is the easy way to me 🙂

new question:

ive got a 3 pull down menus, 1 is the month, 1 is the day, 1 is the year. they are known to the date script as $themonth, $theday and $theyear.

example:

$themonth[2] = february

$theday[30] = 30

$theyear[1] = 2004

now, my question is, how do i get that month, day, year into a format i can use in the code above to give me the date from a number of days from the date selected in the pull down menus?

[man]strtotime[/man] would be a bit more reliable. Not all days are 86400 seconds long, and in certain situations you could end up off by a day one way or the other.

$days = 1;
$timestamp = strtotime("february 30, 2004"); // :)
$h = date('F d', strtotime("$days days", $timestamp));

Should get you March 02 (the day after February 30, 2004....)
