perl cgi script vs. php script

What is the difference between how cgi scripts work and how php scrpts work?

CGI script has to be a executable. PHP script just needs to be readable. Could someone briefly point out the working background of these two scripts?

CGI isn't a language, it's a protocol. PHP is a language, and it can be used according to the CGI protocol (which link I got from here).

You mean Perl run as a CGI program. Perl scripts are run by the Perl compiler/interpreter in the same way tha PHP scripts are run by the PHP compiler/interpreter. PHP scripts used to be interpreted by a bunch of Perl scripts before the PHP 3 interpreter was written in C.

In short; they're the same thing (in fact, Perl can be run as an Apache module the same way that PHP can, though pretty much no-one does that).

for differences in terms of functionality, features, which is better, etc... the list is long..

for me here are some of the things i liked very much with PHP over PERL.

1) It can be inserted as code snippets in HTML... Where PERL had to be stand alone documents..

2) it is soo much easier for newbies and even experts..

3) Fast moving development of the language.. they'er always improving it..

4) It jives better when handling cookies, sessions, etc...
