Simplifying My URLs

I am running a templating system on my site that I wrote in PHP. Currently, I have to access each page like:

www.sample.com/index.php?page=contact

or I can simplify it like:

www.sample.com/?page=contact

Is there any way that I can get the URL to be similar to this:

www.sample.com/contact

I noticed that WikiPedia does something like this, but I'm not ready to go search through their code to figure it out.

Hi seancallaway,

To accomplish what you want to achieve, you will need to web server url rewritting capabilities (e.g. Apache URL Rewriting module).

For a pseudo setup, you can still have the physical directories exist (e.g. www/contact/) and a redirect script inside to point to index.php?page=contact, although I would assume that this is not the route you want to take..

The only way to do it without some URL rewriting is to actually have the script in the URL:

http://my.fab.site.com/index.php/contact/us/today

Everything after index.php will appear in the $_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] variable.
