Credit card processing

Hey all,

I'm designing a shopping cart application for a client, and I have a few questions about how to handle credit cards. My client wants to be able to receive orders online obviously, but he wants to be able to manually process the credit card numbers in-store. What service would be best for this, and how would I go about implementing it? Also, what are the security concerns to take into consideration?

Any comments or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Is the only option to process the transaction realtime via a service such as Verisign?

Well no, you could also have them not input a credit card number but instead input a telephone number then he calls them via the telephone and processes it as a telephone order. But that's going to be a pain in the balls on his end. I recommend doing live transactions.

I know this is going to start an argument about which way is best, but it's sunday afternoon and I'm bored.

I suggest using WorldPay. Never had any problems, and it's dead easy to use.

I've used authorize.net, skipjack.com and paypal.com I've found that they are all about the same. They all have their own piciune little things and idiosyncracies. The main difference is price and often times the deciding factor is volume of sales.

so what would be the best credit card solution in terms of

easy to implement

and best value for

a) low transaction (say a couple a month)
b) medium (say 5 - 50 a month)
c) higher

anyone have any suggestions?
I've never done a CC system but I would very much like to implement one.

Personally, we use Secpay (secpay.com) and have had a very satisfactory service for 4 years. Of course, you have to be a 'real' company with a company bank account authorised to process credit cards. That is more diffficult to set up than many people think which is why services like PayPal can exist. Charges vary and you will need to work out the most economic according to the volume and value you expect; we are down to £0.10 per transaction + bank charges, but then we do £75K - £100K per month. Easy to set up, easy to brand, and all the technical support you will ever need. Highly recomend it.

PS I can implement the payment form for you in about 1 hour if you do sign up with them.
