Insert in the middle

Hi out there,

I have got just a short question, concerning MySQL and PHP. I want to insert a record somewhere in the middle of a table, not at the end, without overwriting another record. Is there an easy method to do so? Thanks in advance

It is quite wrong question. Usually the table has no order and inserted record is inserted physically at the end of the table, but the order which is used when MySQL returns rows is defined in the SELECT statement by clause ORDER BY. So if you have table which is ordere by some integer column, you have to insert the new record with proper value for that column. When it is selected unordered, then you have no chance, how to insert the new row in the middle.

I don't think so. The situation looks like that:

I have got a table where paragraphs (text passages) are stored. Sometimes it is necessary to insert a paragraph between other paragraphs, not at the end.

There is one possibility to make a colum called position and there I could store the internal position but then I have to programme a routine that selects all following paragraphs and update the position +1. And my question simply is, is there an easier way to solve the problem?

Maybe I'm thinking too complicated?

I don't think that there is an easiest way how to do it. You have to create column for internal order of paragraphs and then when you select it you have to order it by this column and of course when you need to insert one para into the middle then you have to update all paragraphs which should be behind the inserted SET position = position + 1. And insert the new one with correct position value.
