getting the size of the files in whole dir

what's the best way to get the total size of all files in a dir?

... do a filesize() on every file then add it all together

Probably a better way but thats all I have.

Hmm, dunno as I ever tried. If you want something built into PHP and like to do math, then try [man]disk_total_space/man ...

If you can call [man]exec/man, this should work on 'Nix, and it does the math for you ahead of time:

$foo=exec("du -h");

echo $foo."\n";

?>

You should be able to hack something similar if the platform is windows ... IIRC, "dir" output contains a "free space" figure.

Of course, the math for [man]disk_total_space[/man] isn't really that hard ... it's on the manual page ... 😉

What you need is a recursive function, so when a directory is encountered it calls itself:

function dirsize($dir)

    trigger_error("Error opening directory: $dir", E_USER_WARNING);

    if ($file == '..' || $file == '.') continue;

    if (is_dir($path)) {
        $size += dirsize($path);
    } else if (is_file($path)) {
        $size += filesize($path);

return $size;

Gah, don't take it too hard ... there's so many functions, and new ones all the time ... who can keep up?

Besides, if we didn't have a "disk_total_space", you proved above that you could've added that functionality. 😉
