uploading to DB

I have been trying to figure out the best way to upload pics to a DB. I was wondering from some of you more experienced people out there.

Lets say you have a form for uploading say a product or something that also requires a picture. Do you put the area to upload the picture in the same form as you would all the other info like the name a description of the product or do you have it so you upload the picture after the initial product is created in the DB?

I am very new and I have the form, but I have no clue on setting it up to upload pics. I have gotten a few scripts that I could use may be to help but I had to get past the question to really even start.

I can post the code for the form if helpfull for any good feedback

You don't store the picture in the database. Instead, store the location of it. You can use a multipart form to send regular data and files (look up [man]handling file uploads[/man] in the manual) and store the location as if it were any other string of text.

The reason you shouldn't store an image in a database is because it has the tendency to corrupt. Images are very unforgiving about losing or gaining data.

I think I know what you are talking about. I will have to really play with it to understand it. I had a friend tell me that also but he was in a hurry and I was not quite sure what he was meaning.

Hey I have this site that breaks down a script for uploading a file and storing a value in a DB. It is a little easier for me to understand but the only thing I do not get is the variables that he is using in the example. I guess I might say I do not know how to set those variables. I am really doing this whole thing on a fly by night kind of thing and have not had the time to really sit down to understand a lot of fundimentals of php.

Can you take the code that he has in this example and actually show me how you would use it in a page with a form?

I wish I had, had more time to learn this stuff before I took on this project.
