Regular expression question.

Hope someone can help with this question...

I have the following expression...

/^[^-_\\.][a-z0-9-_\\.]{1,}[^-_\\.]$/

Now it works fine, except that everything fails if its checking a var that has less than 3 characters.

What I,m trying to prevent is a var containing the _-. characters at the beginning and end. i,ve tried everything.

Is it possible to do with regular expressions.

/^{^-_.?$/}

This will still require at least one character (an empty string won't match).

So the pattern is:
an allowed leading character,
followed by a string of any number of characters ending in an allowed character
