different output mode for same statement

Hi all,

I am trying the following code.

$hostname = gethostbyaddr($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']);

echo " host name is " ;
echo $hostname;

On one PC, the output obtained is 127.0.0.1

On another PC, the output shows the 'computer name'. ( which is seen under 'identification' option of the 'network neighbourhood' )
e.g. 'COMP4'.

How come the two outputs are different ? Basically, I am trying to know whether the program at that instatnt is running locally or from outside ( other than LAN ).

If any other methods are for finding out, then please suggest.

Thanx for the reply. I didn't get u. ( Are both machines separate to the one running Apache/PHP ? )

The machines are connected in LAN. Both are having windows-98 as OS. On both machines Apache/PHP are installed.

On one machine I have

PHP Version 4.2.3
Apache Version --- Apache/1.3.27

On another machine

PHP Version 4.0.6
Apache Version --- Apache/1.3.20

In short, what I want to do is :

install the database / Apache / PHP on single machine in LAN and access the programs from different machines in LAN.

By getting the output from my initial query, in consistent manner, I want to decide whether the program is being used locally ( "programs available on one of the machines in LAN" OR "programs are being referred from the website address" )

Can anybody give some more feedback on this query ?
