[Resolved] simple mysql delete record not working?

I am trying to delete a record from mysql database without sucess
I have looked elsewhere on the boards and in the manual, but as far as I can see I have got the code right, it just isn't working - can anyone see where I am going wrong?

are you sure there is in fact a record in the db matching the criteria in your WHERE clause? use [man]mysql_affected_rows[/man] to see.

I tried
print mysql_affected_rows();
after the $sql query and it came up with nothing - no output at all.

If there were no rows affected would it come out with '0 'or not print anything (' ')?

I am sure that there is a record in the table that matches for the simple reason that the variables I am searching for in the query have been set as a result of user selection . The drop down lists that the user selects from use data from the same table.
On the first page the user selects a client company (which ends up as $Client), from this I set the variable $ClientId which is the Id number for this company. On the next page the user selects a list of users from that company which becmes $User. All the information is in the table.

What am I doing wrong? Any Ideas

Echo the contents of $sql to see for sure what you have. Then run that query from the command line or phpmyadmin to see what it does.

My guess is that one of your variables isn't set right. You have a lot of similar looking variables that might've gotten mixed up (user, username, Cname, Client, client, clientId, ClientId, ClientRef, etc)

I have echoed out $sql and got the following output (which is what I expected)
DELETE FROM tblUser WHERE CName = ' Emma B**y ' AND ClientRef = ' 4 '

I put this into mysqlAdmin and ran the query (obviously without the asterisks) and it didn't work / didn't delete

I have checked and rechecked the variable names
the variable CName is exactly the same as the field name in the table / same with ClientRef

any ideas ?

If ClientRef is a number field or varchar is also make problem for deleting ???? cose here

DELETE FROM tblUser WHERE CName = ' Emma B**y ' AND ClientRef = ' 4 '

is showing as varchar .... "*" could not produce any errer here..

Just a thought......
is the fact that there are spaces around the output anything to do with the sql query not working?
In the $sql output it comes up with ' emma b**y ' and ' 4 '
with a space before and after the text but in the database there isn't these spaces........
I have run it through mysqlAdmin without those spaces and it works.......
if this is the problem how do I get rid of these spaces but keep the space between the first and second word in the CName text?

try trim like this
$User =trim( $_POST['user']);
