PHP XHTML Validator?

Ok, so I'm building websites, and I've signed up to web standards and want everything to be super sexy XHTML strict. I also want to allow site owners to be able to edit content using a simple bespoke content management system as I can't be arsed with shitty little jobs like that.

So I'm looking for a simple way of allowing CMS users to be able to markup textfields for basic formatting (currently using BB style markup, so they use for 'srtong' and so on).

That's all sorted, the bit I'm struggling with is checking to make sure that these tags are embeded correctly, so...

[em][strong]Some[/strong] text[/em]
not...
[strong][em]Some[/strong] text[/em]

So, er... Anyone know of a PHP XHTML Validator function? Or a web based CMS (in php) that churns out good XHTML? Found one but it's an ActiveX component. No chance.

It is possible to write an XHTML validator by using nsgmls: http://www.jclark.com/sp/nsgmls.htm, I can't remember where you download it from. But seek and you shall find.

It's a bit of an effort to set up but the results can be quite rewarding. The problems however are that you will need to put the user input in a well formed page so that the validator can check against the doc type, and I'm not sure that will be the most efficent way of doing it.

Your looking for a web based CMS that churns out valid XHTML (all time time without fail) that is not ActiveX based? Good luck 😉

I'm assuming you have stumbled across Xstandard? An administration section of a web site is typically a controlled environment, using an ActiveX component shouldn't cause any problems (unless the site owners use apple macs, which is not yet supported).

I use Xstandard myself and I am quite happy with it. I am confident that any user input will always be valid and well formed, and there is no risk.
