PHP sessions files contain no information

My session files contain no information. I read a couple of the other posts and did not find my problem to be related to theirs, but to answer some of the questions asked I have tried the php.ini configured with both register_globals on and off and it didn't make a difference. The session files are being saved in /temp but they are totally empty. My version of php is 4.3.1

Anything else and I would be more than happy to give you the info.
