sorting

i have a table. there are lots of records. these records are an exam results. i want to sort them and find persons' line. for example:

tbl_persons
Name           Exam_Result
---------------------------------
Eric               95
Thomas        75
Mary             85

as you see Thomas is the third of the exam. but how i find Thomas's exam degree ?

Where is your table? A big page of text? In a database (and have you tried looking through your database software's documentation on how to use it - the manuals typically cover this sort of thing in tutorials).
