User login Area

Hi,

I have been asked to create a website that provides a unique login area and custom features for all users that authenticate.

what are my options for doing this?

I thought that I could use MySql to store the unique user information, but I am not sure how this would work.

Is there anyone that has already done this type of thing that can point me in the right direction and offer some advice?

If you are new to PHP your best bet might be to find a script that is close to what you want to modify it to be exactly what you want. Just watch out for over-inflated scripts - just get one that does what you need. If you want to extend it, you can do so later on.
