http authentication through php

I am trying to make an html form that processes a username and password to get rid of the normal username/password pop up (which looks really bad). Is this possible to do?

P.S. it has to send the username and password to the webserver to authenticate. My host won't let me turn this off

Wait, what the hell are you trying to do? I am totally confused. That's not uncommon round here but still.

the "normal username/password pop up" is simply because your server is sending a specific response header to the browser. this is typically done via an htaccess file in the relavent directory. you can (usually) romove the htaccess file (or comment out certain lines) to remove the HTTP authentication and write your own authorization routine (using a plain HTML form).
