PhDs

Am considering starting one, but I'm worried about the effect that it may have on my career. One of the ones I'm looking at is on database and information systems (i.e. nothing to do with web development, which is what I want to end up doing) and I'm worried about being "out of the loop" as it were. Does anyone on here have one, or work with someone who has one?

Would it be detrimental? I don't wanna stay in academia and therefore wouldn't stay on and lecture... I just want the qualification.

From what I understand really the only reason to get a PhD is in order to join acadamia, which is what I plan on doing and why I plan on getting mine. HOwever, if you want to do web development then you should probably get you PhD in internet technologies. Cambride offers if.

Piersk - Yeah man I know a lot of people with PhD's. It's hard work and my g/f actually is getting one. She is going to Penn State for Psychology. Getting her PhD in Psych! Yeah I am one lucky SOB. NOT! LOL. I am screwed. Anywhoo, if you want to keep doing the web dev part then yeah Internet Technologies or even Computer Engineering is the place to roll to. Information systems is good but that will just make you an expensive programmer. To be honest if your in the states look at our economy, programmers aren't in high demand. I think it would be better to roll with a Computer Engineer or in Internet Security, Internet Technology. That is just my $.02.

Yeah Cambridge --> My fiance is also working on her psychology series. Here's a tip, everytime they start psycho-analysing you just start explaining how you would go about coding a diagnostics machine to do what they are doing to you. That usually shuts them up.
