Connection to another server

i am trying to connect to couple of servers to pull XML data from there. i found out that it takes 1-2 seconds to establish connection to the server using fsockopen. i connect using a hostname.

do you think it would help if i would connect directly to IP instead of using hostname? i guess PHP/server has to look for the IP before doing a connection.

It's not the PHP server/script/browser that "finds" the IP, it's the DNS servers that forwards you/your script.

But yes, if you use the IP directly, that means there doesn't have to be a DNS lookup. (Whether that's where the delay is remains to be seen, but I have noticed cases of improvement when the web server has been able to do its own domain name<->IP mapping.)
