images in databae

when I add a new product to the db i also add an image for it this is such as pic.gif typed in by the user .
then to dispaly this I use

echo '<td width="7%" align="center"><img src="'.$file.'" alt="my picture"/></td></tr>';

where $file is equal to whatever the user entered e.g pic.gif
but all that is displayed is a white box with a red x in it does anyone have any ideas?

<img src=" ... "> is looking for the path relative to the document containing the <img> tag. You should try echoing the value of $file and seeing what is stored there. You can go even further and try hard coding that value (or values) into the <img> tag and see if you see images in your browser. It's probably a path issue, though.

Where are you storing the image? Store the name of the image file in the database, upload the actual image into a directory.

Ex:

$dir_path = '../image/';

echo '<img src="'.$dir_path.$file_name">';
