capture frame from video via PHP, possible ?

Hi!

Using PHP GD functions on a mpg will return a long image build based on the video frames, let me know if anyone knows about a solution to randomly capture a video preview image via PHP.

So your saying that when you use GD to read a movie file it will create an array with all the picture frames in it, yes? If this is true then you could just load it up and add the mpg to an array then somehow read the amount of frames its recovered and just use the rand() function to select a random array element. This would be very bandwidth costing though wouldnt it? Woudnt you be better taking say 10 shots of the video and just randomising which one appears?

No, when using GD on for example and MPG video, it will create one long image build based on the frames of the videos of wich 70% is black and 30% an jpg quality image in the size of the video. If the video has 30 frames and is w300xh200 in size the returned image would measure w300xh6000.

so if it returns a 300 x 6000 image made up of 300 x 200 frames, just use gd to crop the image to a 300 x 200 section

will be very processor costly though, as many videos will have 24 frames per second!

I was bumping for more replies, your solution could work but not all frames returned in GD are visible and sometimes none at all so we would need a better solution..
