[Resolved] mkdir problems

I am making a script that in part of it, it will make a new directory using the function mkdir and the mode 0777.

Now that work all perfectly but when I go into my FTP program (I use WS_FTP) to put files (like images and .php files) into the folder, it will not work but it will work for the other folders. The error message I get when I try to put files is: "Failed" and "Can't open that file: Permission denied". I tried changing the R/W/X mode on it, but that did not help.

To just to make sure... SSH to your server and try issuing the chmod command from the shell on your specified directory. If this is just for testing (and not a real server for public use), try it again with 777.
Try uploading your file again.
You PHP scripts are probably running as user 'nobody' so that user account will be restricted (if you're using Apache, at least) to the web server root. Bear that in mind when you try using the mkdir() function.

I am using it on a site that I bought a hosting from so I can not get into the server or edit anything with it. The hosts server OS is Fedora linux. They do use apache and I have no idea what you mean for number 1.

Is there a way for you to connect ot the Fedora server remotely? If you know what telnet is (and I don't say that to insult your intelligence, but just to start with something), SSH is similar, except more secure. If you know about telnet, then what you'll want to do is find out if your hosting company permits you to connect to the the web server via telnet or SSH. If you've never used SSH, you will need to download a client. The most common one is probably putty and it can work on Windows. Just do a Google search for putty or putty.exe and several links should turn up.

I know this sounds like a lot more information that has nothing to do with your problem, but as you work with Linux more, you eventuall come into situations where you can't differentiate between problems with the OS or with PHP, such as your problem with mkdir and chmod.

My guess is that the user account that the hosting company gave you limits your use of chmod. You may want to ask them just to be sure. Sorry if I've confused you with my responses. Just trying to help. If you have no way into the server, you probably just want to call their tech support and explain what you're trying to do. Hope this helped.

None of that really helped. Sorry. And no, I purchased web hosting so I can not touch the server or get into it in any way.

Anyways, when I use WS_FTP I can edit the files normally, but if it is a folder I created myself from a PHP script then it will not work normally. By working normally I mean being able to add. remove or delete the folder or contents inside of it without getting the error: Permission Denied.

Now I made a script which is used to upload images onto my hosting. Now this script made that folder and when I use it to upload an image into the folder it created, it works perfectly.

It's because the directory is created by your PHP script, with the user/group of the Apache (or php ?) program, not your user/group.

For instance, all the files or directories that you created are belonging to "john", group" users".

The directory created by your script belong to "nobody", group "nogroup"

You can check that with your FTP client asking for a full detailed listing on the FTP server (you will see the owner and group of every file on the FTP server)

I'm not sure you can change the owner of your directory inside your script with the PHP command "chown" by giving the ownership to your FTP
login/account.

Ok, so I try using chown with by using this code.


  $filename = "./admins/" . strtolower($username);

  chown($filename, "josh");

Where $username comes from a cookie and josh is the username I use to get into my ftp. The problem I get is that the parser gives me this error:

Warning: chown(): Operation not permitted

I used $filename when I created the script so I know it is the right directory destination.

see manual [man]umask[/man] and this note to the [man]mkdir[/man] function in the manual. Do what it says and your problems will be over.

You might notice that when you create a new directory using this code:
mkdir($dir, 0777);
The created folder actually has permissions of 0755, instead of the specified
0777. Why is this you ask? Because of umask(): http://www.php.net/umask
The default value of umask, at least on my setup, is 18. Which is 22 octal, or
0022. This means that when you use mkdir() to CHMOD the created folder to 0777,
PHP takes 0777 and substracts the current value of umask, in our case 0022, so
the result is 0755 - which is not what you wanted, probably.
The "fix" for this is simple, include this line:
$old_umask = umask(0);
Right before creating a folder with mkdir() to have the actual value you put be
used as the CHMOD. If you would like to return umask to its original value when
you're done, use this:
umask($old_umask);
