Bit of coding help needed

Just wondering if anyone can help me, I have a multi-dimensional array which contains a string which identifies its relationship with other items as part of a navigation structure.

For example 1, 2, 3, 4 would be top level items and 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1 would be the second level relating to the top level and finally there is 1-1-1, 2-1-1, 3-1-1 and so on.

Basically I am trying to rewrite the array so that I can easily work out relationships by using a string length pre-filter.

I had thought about organising my array in a number of dimensions like this:

From a flat array how could I acheive this easily???

One thing I had thought about doing is first iterating through and building the top level dimensions and then exploding the next string in to an array and trying to assign the specific dimensions however I am unsure how you would do this if you had a string like this 1-1-1 on the fly.

Normally you would obviously use array[1] [1][1] => $value. But what I am struggling to get my head around is how you could build that on the fly. If I knew this, then I could probably almost build the rest myself

you may want to look at eval()
you can then construct a string and then execute it

 $val='test value';
eval('$array[1][1][1]=$val;');
echo $array[1][1][1];

That seems a good suggestion, my problem being that I have a string like $test = [0][1] and I am trying to append this on to the array to access it, however eval is struggling with this.

Anyone got any more suggestions??

you need to construct the string as if it was php code and if using
double quotes dont forget to escape the $ otherwise use single quotes as i have in my example above

 $test = '[0][1]';
 $test='$array'.$test.'=$val;'; 
eval($test);
