case for learning PHP?

I am just starting PHP and did a little investigation into its use. when I do a google search on PHP it brings back 600,000 records. Java is 100,000. ASP is 400,000. Looking at these numbers PHP wins. But if I do a search on some of the main jobs search engines then PHP is significantly smaller then Java and ASP.

a language could be the greatest thing on earth, but mean nothing if the people with money to spend do not use it.

my search was also based in the US of A as I am sure my results would be different in Europe.

Hrmm...you're a windows user aren't you?

So learn it to pad your resume. Then also learn java and asp. Hell, learn coldfusion too. I'd say "the people with the money" would be more inclined to hire a person who does good work, and can make the pages look and act the way they want. Most of them don't know what language it takes to do that, and don't really care. But if you have multiple languages under your belt, it'll be a lot easier to find a job, if that's what you're going for.

i am just trying to foster discussion here. i am not looking for a job and I am not trying to bash PHP so hardcore PHP people do not need to get defensive.

I am not asking if it is worth it for me to learn PHP. I want to learn it because, like you said, it is good to know multiple languages and this fits in well with my current needs and environment.

As for a company not caring what language you know as long as you are good. That might be the case for a small company, but not one with 1000+ employees where they have a java development group. They are not going to hire a guy that only knows PHP no matter how good he might be in PHP.

Again, this is not an attack on PHP. Just a discussion!

From what ive seen the reason for so little jobs is because most PHP Develoeprs get outsourced from somewhere very little are kept inhouse and if are they will need to know something else other than PHP maybe .NET,Java etc

Codes such as Net and ASP have been around for some time and it normal for companyies to stick with these codes bc of there record.

Another example of this is Windows and it enemies LINUX and mac, The reason why pll stick with Windows is bc its to well know and they don't want to know about linux witch maybe or may not be the next OS Giant be cause.

I'm with Windows and I don't want to go to Linux bc its seem a bit scary even though I am a computer person myself, just I do not want to go to ASP bc I am to familer with PHP
