Download file from server to client PC

I'm trying to determine the best way to download a file from my PHP website via a browser without having to run an FTP server. My goal is to display a list of files for our customers via PHP (I've got that part down) and have then click on a file and have a "Save As" box pop up (I don't know how to do this). They then choose a location and the download proceeds.

Any ideas???

just create normal HTML hyperlinks to the files. depending on the file's MIME types and the user's browser settings the user will either receive a standard "save as..." dialog or the browser will attempt to open the file. either way, with most browsers you can right/context click on a link and choose "save target as..."

ok. This works great except that the"Save Target As" box defaults to a .txt file. Is there a way to keep if from defaulting to a .txt file? When the file is saved a .txt is appended to the filename.
