Inserting smileys into forum

I have a pre-built forum script which is very simple/basic and I am improving it, and adding some features to it.

It is an in-game forum, so you may have a rough idea on what im talking about, I hope.

I basically want to make it so people can insert smileys, But i have no idea how to go about coding this. How would I get the smileys to be inserted into a post, and then shown within a post.

Eg: Clicking a smiley with a big grin will insert into a post. If I wanted to not click the image to make it appear, i could just write ": D" and it would show up. (without the space)

How do I go about this.

Firstly its javascript if you click on the emoticon for the post. Secondly try this


$string = "Test Test :D Test";

$img = '<img src="grin.gif" />';
$string = str_replace(":D",$img,$string);

Thats a simple version and not easy to make additions without going into the code.
