what is _vti_bin

Hi,
I am sorry if this is off topic, but whenever i google for _vti_bin i just get index listings, so i can not tell what exactly it is. I was checking the access logs for apache and have these errors every so often.

[Sun Nov 14 18:00:54 2004] [error] [client 66.90.170.68] request failed: URI too long (longer than 8190)
[Sun Nov 14 18:01:24 2004] [error] [client 66.90.170.68] File does not exist: /www/www.buttons.com/public/htdocs/_vti_bin
[Sun Nov 14 18:36:25 2004] [error] [client 66.90.170.104] request failed: URI too long (longer than 8190)

Any help is appreciated.

IIRC, _vti_bin is most commonly associated with Frontpage extensions, which means "DELETE ME" in my book. If you're getting those in your apache logs, you're most likely getting probed by some zombie machine or worm that is trying to exploit frontpage extensions and/or IIS, and you can usually ignore them (unless you want to be proactive and ban their IP or something--which is usually ineffective against the problem as a whole)
