Help with embeding and excel spreadsheet.

I am fairly new. I did a web site recently that is for a realtor. Has embeded images of the property and works great.

My next customer has 12 salesmen and has to report back once a month to a manufacturer they represent on the sales leads they are working on. Currently he has an excel spread sheet for this manufacturer that they email around to each salesperson. The salesperson detaches it and updates it and attaches it back to an email and sends it on to the next salesperson. Not very timely.

I proposed a mysql database to hold the data and any saleperson could update it on the net at anytime but he wants to take a baby step first.

He wants me to inbed the excel spreadsheet in a mysql record and when the salesperson clicks on it it opens excel and lets the salesperson update it and it go back to the mysql record.

Is this possible? Any clues on how I would start this project?

Any ideas would be greatly apprecaited.

dont really know what you mean by 'imbed' but you can create the database, then use 'linked' tables to either excel or to access

New at this. What I mean by imbed is to take a spreadsheet and import the file into a mediumblob field in a mysql database like importing an image.

Maybe what you mean by linked is to leave the xls file in a directory on the server and just save a link to it in the mysql database?

Can you then put that url - link on the screen and then when clicked on will it open excel on the client and let you work on the excel xls file and then when you close excel put it back some way or other?

Sorry for my beginner type questions. Is the above possible - to either save the xls file in a field of the mysql db or in a directory on the server and in some way obtain that xls file via a php page and put it back after updating it?
