line break when hitting enter

Hi,

I have a textfield and want a line break if I hit enter.
Usually I do this by adding just a br tag but I know there is a way to do this the correct way.

is it not a ascii to <br> way or can this be done simplyer.

when you submit your form and run the form data thru [man]nl2br[/man] all of the line breaks will be converted to <br> tags. isn't this what you are trying to do?

yes indeed, but if i hit enter does this give a /n tag ? never saw this in the database

What do you see? \n is how the newline character is usually represented, because it's easier to see in text than

when i type this in my text area :

sfhsjdhfsdaj (hit enter)
sfhsjdhfsdaj (hit enter)
sfhsjdhfsdaj (hit enter)
sfhsjdhfsdaj (hit enter)
sfhsjdhfsdaj (hit enter)

i get this in my output:

sfhsjdhfsdajsfhsjdhfsdajsfhsjdhfsdajsfhsjdhfsdajsfhsjdhfsdaj

and i want the top part
