Max characters is a text area?

Hi,
I'm having a hard time trying to set a text area to hold a max amount of characters of 255. I tried maxLength="255" but it didnt work. Through Google I found a java counter which I suppose would work unless anybody copies and pastes text.

Is there an easier solution to set the maximum amount of characteres that somebody can put in a text area?

Textarea does not have the maxlength paramater as input does.

The only why to limit characters is javascript or [man]strlen[/man] and an error.
