Herm, while I'm at it, and since we'll be thinking about the holidays for the next month or so:
A few years ago, in a small Kansas town not far from here, the school district was served with an injunction that kept them from presenting a Christmas program (in the Elementary school) that featured Santa Claus and included a "Nativity Scene". As they couldn't produce the program, Santa was effectively "barred" from appearing, and that was the headline one local paper chose to run for that story....
My response: a protest song, sung to the tune of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer*"
CHORUS: Santa got run over by a lawyer
walkin' into school in Baxter Springs;
We're tolerant of everyone's religion;
just don't let 'em show those manger scenes...
Well, I used to think that Santa
was just a friend to girls and boys;
now I know that he's an idol
that the kids have all been prayin' to for toys...
If we let him in our program,
if we just let him appear,
it might start a "Worship Service",
where they jump up on his lap and pull his beard...
CHORUS
What if we took all the lawyers,
and marched them all into the sea?
It might take ten years, or twenty,
but just think of how much happier we'd be.
We could learn to trust each other,
learn to respect one another's point of view,
and we wouldn't have to worry
if the neighbors 'round the block were goin' to sue ...
CHORUS[/i]
- A true American gem that European culture
is better for [probably] never having heard...
