Does this guy know what he's talking about?

I'm on the brink of making the leap into MVC (model-view-controller) type architecture - just plain tired of having to dig through a bunch of dependent classes and functions every time I need to repurpose code, and this seems like some sort of faintly holy grail - for me, for now, anyway (until the NEXT new holy grail 🙂

Anyway, came across this guy named Tony Marston who goes pretty deep into the MVC thing.

Seems to break a few rules (not that I'd know, but he fesses up and defends his choices pretty well it seems to me).

So I guess what I'm wondering is, besides being an entertaining read and VERY accessible (something of a rarity in this world), is his stuff solid or am I going to be shooting myself in the foot in some unforeseen way if I make him my guru (in a manner of speaking) and start doing what he suggests?

And if so, got any better places to point me?

I wouldn't like to comment on whether Tony Marston's approach is commendable or despicable. My grasp of OOP is tenuous to say the least.

I do, however, agree that his articles are well worth reading, particulary for someone like myself who wants to be good at OOP but lacks the theoretical and practical grounding.

That guy sounds like he knows of what he speaks. Certainly alot more than me 😉 I definitely agree that if it works, and adheres to basic OO principles, then it is not wrong, regardless of whether it flies in the face of past, proven ideas.

I've been playing with the MVC pattern in PHP 5 for a while now, and produced what I think is a fairly decent system based on the Java Struts approach, although very simple in comparison to what is out there.

I have looked at countless different PHP/MVC architectures (Limb, Phrame, PHP-MVC etc) and found it hard to get an understanding of how things should work. In fact I came to the conclusion that there is no right way to do it, the MVC pattern is really just an idea, the implementation is up to the developer.

I will be giving those articles a more thorough read, definitely enlightening 🙂

I second Shrike's opinion that there is no single "right" way to implement MVC.
