I see people generally can't be bothered to help new people because they don't feel rewarded in anyway.
Now this is just a thought, not an entire project proposal...
WHy not have some sort of 'kudos' system where instead of just marking a thread as resolved, the topic start of the help forums select who helped them the most and award them with Kudos points?
Later they can be exchanged for sponsor-donated things or phpbuilder funded even 😃
If they are to be exchanged then there should be 2 figures for each member - n / N
active kudos / total kudos
total is a sum of what they have accumilated and 'active' is how many the user has left to exchange.
