MySQL close and it's importance.

I was just wondering how important is it to use the mysql_close() function. I mean, if it is not used can this affect the server (webpage) in any way?

Yes and no. Depends on how you are connecting for starters. And how many queries and connections to the database are open.

There was a debate a while back or more of a discussion about this I cannot seem to find it.

I personally dont use it, however I dont get many connections and I limit the number of queries as much as possible.

Thanks planetsim. I have a portal that uses quite a few queries, and almost every include needs the database connection, so I don't really close it anywhere.

The problem is, inside this portal there is also a forum and the users recently started complaining that the pages are taking longer to load. I know this could be due to other things other then the database, but since I have included a bunch of new pages to the portal I was thinking this had something to do with the recent slowdown.

it appears that PHP kill automatically only the last connection opened or used as default in a query. If you open more than one connection I advise you close them all (even if just one for maintenance, come the day you need more). This can easily be done in the destrutor of your database connection class (you know you want one, really).
How do I know? I had around 500 ghost connections on a database from a system using 2 database connections simultaneously some time ago and since then i close everything and had no problems related to ghost connections).

Alright, thanks for the tips Bunkermaster!! I'll be implementing some changes through out the next few weeks and see if they increase the board/portal performance.
