storing PDF files as BLOB in MYSQL

I have a large number of pdf files- mauals, programming guides, brochures that I was thinking of storing in MYSQL si I could dynamically populate select lists etc. I have read comments on the Net suggesting a file system would be better, though would not enable me to populate drop down. Does any one have a view/experience of storing pdf files in mysql?

well, you still could store the information about the file (including path in file system) in a database only, this should allow to populate select lists from it without the drawback of slow access to the files when storing them in the database.
