starting CMS based site, directions and advices?

In the past i was always trying to avoid using content menagement system, but try to make different and outstanding sites. Well the project i'm going to start now will need CMS for sure. But i'm not familiar with the subject. The only one i have used is php-nuke, but in nowadays as i know it's considered as to buggy (and the project is abandoned..).

So, i need your help, to get fast in the sphere. To get idea which are the leaders now. Their + and -. Which is good for what.
I prefer open source and free ones.

The site will be about GSMs and different kinds of mobile devices.
With a lot of logos, pictures, melodies, in short a lot of files to download. Some of them paid. With previews and so on...
News, reviews, software and much more...
So, i need something powerful and very flexible.

I hope this thread will become good start-point for everyone going to start CMS based site.

I've heard some good things about e107. Never used it personally though.

We use Microsoft CM Server at work, but that's a little expensive 🙂

I've yet to see a free CMS system that actually includes any M. They're all great for getting C onto the server, but if you want to have any control over workflow or anything you're going to have to pay. A lot.

FKing, I know that PHP-Nuke has been abandoned, but I think thats because the Post Nuke project has pretty much taken over

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. It's very configurable.

I know it's not a true CMS, but you could use Movable Type. That can be used as a CMS. About.com uses MT to edit the pages.
