chronjobs and php

can php do anything like chronjobs, I am thinking of making a website where the data is refreshed every hour and unfortunately the host doesn't have chronjobs installed. can php do anything like that without taking up loads of resources?

You can't let php do this. A page is only executed when it's requested. There for you can't let php do cron jobs. What you can do is let the script run when a person hits you're page and the script hasn't run that hour. This way your visitors kind of do this for you.

that's what i was afraid of, i dont have a high traffic site, so it could be days between hits, and that is a lot of script to run. though i could probably make a program that will access my website every hour to alleviate some of that strain. thanks anyway.

What the other posters say about cron jobs is nonsense.

You can easily use PHP for cron jobs, just set up your cron job normally and invoke the php CLI interpreter with the appropriate commands.

He doesn't have access to the crontab so he probably doesn't have access to a shell.
Ergo he can't use the CLI interpreter.
