Search all where first character equals

I need to do a mysql select statement where I can search the first letter of a field and return all...

In other words I'm building an A-Z menu...
If you select A...

Then everything that starts with A in the column fname will be returned...

I can't believe I can't figure this out...

Try this:

select distinct substring(fname, 1, 1) as letter from table_name order by letter asc
