transferring form variables without submit

been experimenting with no luck here.

goal:

there's a form someone is filling out but they see another link on the page that they click on before hitting submit on their form, this page they clicked on has another form on it, i want all the data that they typed in on the previous form to transfer to this new form so they don't have to re-type it in.

i've been messing with the url query string and trying to setup the ahref on the link button to go to file.php?blah=$name&blah=$email&blah=$phone

in the browser it just ends up looking like this = file.php?blah=&blah=&blah=

the variables don't get transferred.

i have error checking setup on the first form and when i don't fill it out completley and hit submit and it gives me the message that it's not completly filled out, but then i hit the other link somewhere on the page that takes me to another page that has a form, then the variables transfer and all is good.

php newb here, learning as i go, any help will be greatly appreciated.

The idea is that the form gets submitted. Basically i dont think you understand the server side process. Ill make it short cos its explained extremely well in a previous thread elsewhere if you wish to search. Basically PHP processes your php page, queries database sends it back to the web server (apache in most cases) once its sent it to the web server PHP has stopped processing that file and awaits execution of another.

getting back on track here, what you are doing is basically trying to make PHP work with the client, this page your viewing know is not on the server (well it is but the html is stored in your browsers cache), which is what you see now. PHP being a server side langauge cannot communicate with the display (your form) unless the data is sent PHP via Post or GET.

If you are using a link you may wish to try javascript so that the Link, sends it like a normal form however you will find some users do not have Javscript enabled, so your better just using the simple Form Submit button.

thanks, that totally answered my question and led me to the right path. i'm now using jscripting to set a cookie for that info.
