image upload and display

Hello,
I need to be able to give users who are logged onto my membership script the ability to upload pictures and then displayed on their profile. I get the general idea of uploading a file and storing it in a directory, but what im stuck on is associating that file with the particular user. I know you cant save an image directly to a my-sql database so i need to figure out a way to give the picture a variable or something... am i on the right track? Id also like to be able to have them upload up to 3 pictures, and im having trouble manipulating the code to process multiple pictures

Why not give the images a unique name and save the names of the images in a mysql table along side the userid.
